Mar01/Season's First Cherry Blossom Forecast
Cherry blossom (Sakura 桜) usually bloom between mid-March and early May. This year, the blossoms are expected to open around March 16 in Tokyo, a little earlier than usual year. (Cherry Blossoms - Someiyoshino Sakura tree)
Last year Tokyo's cherry blossom season officially began early on March 14 which was the earliest ever bloom in Tokyo.
While the dates change somewhat from year to year, there are areas in which cherry blossoms bloom even earlier!
One is the town of Kawazu, Shizuoka-ken, which is about 3 hours south of Tokyo along the Izu Peninsula coast. Kawazu is known for a unique variety of cherry tree, known as Kawazu-zakura, which blooms around a month earlier than typical blossoms.
Cherry blossoms in Japan bloom for about a week. But if you can’t make peak bloom, fear not: you can also see late-blooming cherry blossoms in colder regions as well, through April.
