Question time: Where porn and mainstream differ.
I'm sure many of you know about the anime Redo of a healer, a controversial title known for it's disturbing moments; with memes being made about how it is surprising that the show was not classified as hentai...well guess what happened?
Hanime now has Redo of a healer as part of their streaming service, which now means that the anime is now classified as a hentai.
When I discovered this was the case, a couple of questions came to mind, like will other services like Crunchyroll and Funimation continue to air the anime or will it be dedicated to just hentai services?
However the question that I've been thinking about for a while now is where porn and mainstream media differ. I'm sure most of you know that within censor boards, porn films get given a different certificate to other adult films. In the UK, that certificate is 'R18', and this certificate means that the film can not be distributed in mainstream entertainment stores and can only be distributed in licensed sex shops (i'm not too sure how second hand online selling works in regards to this rule).
Yet despite this certificate's purpose, some porn films do get given lower certificates. For example, there is a company known as Sacrament which specialises in softcore Japanese porn with titles such as maid in Japan and Milk the maid, and they've received an '18' certificate by the BBFC, which means that the films can be purchased in entertainment stores that aren't licensed sex shops.
The BBFC have stated that an R18 (aka. a porno) product is "primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults.", so there must have been some exception for the given examples that made them available for purchase in mainstream shops, but I can't figure out what these reasons would be (not that I'm complaining, Maid in japan is a hot film and being able to purchase it outside of sex shops makes it easier to buy).
So here's my question for you. There is obviously a line between something that is like porn and something that is porn, what do you consider the difference between a mainstream title (i.e., something you can buy anywhere) and a porno?
I hope you are all having a great day.
