Dating sites and forums

Why are dating sites and ones like this so phony? I get a few SPAM requests on here and every site wants you to have a paid membership but cannot produce results either way? It used to be easier years ago when there were good, somewhat honest forus and chat rooms. My wife and I met quite a few people that way. Now, it all seems just about the money.
