The Curious Case of Scissoring
The curious case of Scissoring: Why some lesbians are obsessed with it, while others consider it a “porn myth” to visually please the male audience
First off, we have to distinguish between Tribadism and Scissoring. More oftentimes than not, Tribbing and Scissoring are used synonymously with each other, but this is actaully wrong.
Scissoring is a type of Tribadism where two women interlace their legs in a way that their vaginas and inner thighs can touch. All Scissoring is Tribadism, because the goal is sexual stimulation through genital friction (lat. tribas = “to rub”), but not all Tribadism in turn is Scissoring. There exists a wide variety of Tribbing positions that have little do with Scissoring—the Missionary position, the Reverse Cowgirl position, or the “Sinn Saddle” (named after Sinn Sage) just to name a few.
The definitions become even more confusing when you keep in mind that “Tribbing” is a fairly modern term, while the root word Tribadism simply referred to any type of “Lesbianism” for the longest time in history. This makes it especially hard to trace down the time period when Tribadism turned into a name for a sexual act, and when Tribadism again became known as Scissoring or Tribbing in the porn industry. The term Tribbing as a Lesbian sex category seems to be a fairly recent neologism, not older than 20-25 years at most.
Now, why is it that some “authentic” Lesbians consider Scissoring a myth, something that never happens in actual relationships (according to them), while others are virtually obsessed by it, itching to find sex partners online just to rub their pussies together?
From my observation, I can break it down to three basic problems:
Matter of size: Some women have the anatomy for it—some do not
Matter of taste: Some women are into it—others are not
Matter of fit: Some couples are “compatible”—other couples are not
Women, or should I say human beings, come in all shapes and sizes. The Glans clitoridis being fairly small (about ½ an inch to 1 inch on average) plus covered in clitoral hood means the clitoris head has to be erected from arousal, or the clitoral hood has to be pulled back by hand in order to achieve point-blank clit-to-clit friction.
Since the clitoris head is highly sensitive, covered and protected, this type of friction can simply be “too much” for some women, which is probably the reason some prefer a more passive missionary type of Tribadism where only the Venus mounds are actually rubbing together. When it comes to anatomy and size, it is, from my observation, usually the bigger women and those with fairly small or “hidden” clitoris heads that seem to have trouble achieving stimulation and orgasm through Tribadism, therefore preferring oral or penetrative sexual practices. Being physically “compatible” with your partner is another thing that needs to be considered. Two chubby girls will likely have a lot of trouble achieving continuous clit-to-clit friction while two skinny women with small clitoris heads that are covered with a lot of skin will probably experience similar trouble; their pussies may be touching while their clits are not. In the case of two “bigger” women, the pussies may not even meet at all. Another aspect is "flexibility". Not all women are “fit” and flexible enough to find the open scissors or riding position where one women mounts the other very comfortable. The ideal case is two partners that are fit, flexible and have clitoral heads that become easily erected and visible. If these two women are slender on top of it then it will be extremely easy to achieve prolonged clit-to-clit friction, and chances are they will find it very pleasing (see Zazie Skymm for example). Women who call any type of “Scissoring” (while actually referring to Tribbing) a “porn myth” are usually from the former categories. Now, don't hate me for it but I believe body types play a huge role in it. However, Sappho Love Films' "The Girls of Roxy Club" and other series also proved that even bigger women can in fact achieve direct clit-to-clit stimulation, it's simply not as easy.
