Policing the Police (Non-Sex)
Police. They're main priority is to protect civilians and arrest the murderers, thieves and so on. It is their job to protect us.... but whose job is it to protect us from them? I know, I know, every cop isn't bad, but every cop isn't good either. I was on my favorite site, Reddit (fellow Redditors stand up :O!!), earlier today and I came across a link. I clicked and read the story of the brutal beating and ultimate death of a homeless man at the hands of police. I read the story and watched a portion of a video that went along with it. The video was of the altercation. From what I read, police were called to an area when there was a call about someone breaking into cars. What happened to start the fight between this man and six police officers (from what I read) I'm still not sure.
I have to tell you, the video is hard to watch. How is it possible that it takes so much law enforcement to take down ONE UNARMED man. I could see one or two policemen being needed for a situation like that, but six?! Was the man that belligerent that every squad car in the area had to be called? I just don't get how something like this happens and yet... situations like these happen frequently. Where unarmed civilians are brutally beaten and 'accidentally shot'. I see so many alternatives to address a situation like that that does not involve a beating like that. I've seen incidents where a perpetrator is tased and even shot with rubber pellets in order to restrain him/her. I have seen too many news articles where an officer ends up on the wrong side of the law, where they are seen using excessive force when it is not needed, where they are seen abusing an individuals rights just because they do not have a badge. I have even seen videos of policemen and women behaving horribly while they were off-duty. One video I remember seeing was an off-duty officer, who was intoxicated while I may add, try to arrest a woman after she refused all of his advances. I can't think of anything scarier than a drunk police officer. To think that a tiny piece of metal can have such an impact and this thought brings me to this one question: Should police be policed? Show officers have to wear monitors so that we civilians have a chance at justice when we encounter a bad cop. I know that we taxpayers would be paying for it, but I think this is a necessity. Cameras are the only thing that can help reassure that a victim's voice will be heard. But... that's just my opinion.
Be safe out there everyone....
