What's in a name these days ?
No I'm not referring to whatever goofy screen name you have here on xhamster or what name your parents may have given you in a drunken stuper when you were born :) For those that follow the NFL & for those that don't there has been a topic that's been picking up steam again especially here in the D.C area where I reside. The professional football team known of course as the Washington Redskins is in the crosshairs of congress, native American support groups and other factions that think their name is offensive.
It's debate that's come up so many times in the past not just with the burgundy & gold but something that has fueled numerous highschools, colleges, and even some pro teams to change logos, names and fight songs. The term redskin as defined here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redskin_(slang) by our friends at Wikipedia this is not a term you want to throw around loosely in a room of people with native American heritage ! You know that "N" word that strikes a nerve in a lot of circles ? there are those that put Redskin in the same class.
Before I go on let me give you a little backround about how this came to be and how it's mushroomed into ticking time bomb we have now. George Preston the original founder of the team an owner from 1932-1969 was a football visionary, businessman and self proclaimed racist. He was the last owner to employ an African American player in 1962 and that was only at the urging of the D.C government. His goal to keep the redskins as a viable brand in the good ole boy segregated south !
And like a bad one night stand the morning after the name was going nowhere even after his passing. Through several generations and multiple owners to the man we have today running the franchise ( Daniel Snyder ) they have all stood fast in keeping the name what it is standing by tradition and fan loyalty !! Passionate fans like chief Z pictured below are a representation to some of a proud franchise and to others racial bigotry.
I'll let you make your own decision on that. Along with the marching band who after every score play maybe the most famous fight song in all of sports .. take a listen racist or not in your mind ?

Now this isn't the first time the name of a Washington DC sports team has come under fire. In 1996 after years of going by the Washington Bullets ( originally the Baltimore Bullets ) a name changed was forced because of then the city's reputation as the murder capitol of the world. Purist hate the new name of Wizards & want great moments like this back :

no one in these videos was thinking about putting a .38 slug in someone just a hunch.
With all that said it's not matter if but when the name Redskins will be changed. Corporate pressure and the now involvement of congress. Yes for those that don't live in the states we have no crime, no financial issues, no outdated laws that need a second look, no poverty, we just live in overall pure bliss that's why they have time to put all their resources into addressing this issue.
I'm not here to twist your opinion one way or another just here to inform and gather your thoughts. So which should it be ? Hail to The Redskins ? The Hell with The Redskins ? or
or what that k** thinks ?
