90's band madness
So here's the deal I've always had an appreciation for all kinds of music.. I love rap & hip hop, pop music certainly has it's place ( although I can only handle most of it small doses ) and nowadays I can even tolerate a little bit of country ( again in small doses lol. But besides rap, rock music may be my favorite. But growing up when & where I did that point blank just wasn't cool for people of my let's say paint job if you catch my drift ;) At parties and school dances I wasn't allowed to join in the fun when a good rock song or alternative song came on out of fear of being ridiculed and called a sellout or a freak. Sucks I know I had to enjoy great music in my room with the doors shut and no one home. It wasn't until I was older and frankly didn't give a fuck that openly went to concerts, played all and every kind of music I wanted with the windows down at stop lights.. you get the drift.
Which got me to thinking who was the best band of that era ? The 90's so many options, so many polarizing figures in the music industry. I've got my personal favorite of that decade ( Limp Bizkit ) start your jokes now but I will back my case for them shortly !! But who did you guys like to listen to & who would you deem the best ? With that question in my mind I decided to create a 16 team ( well band ) tournament to find that out !
Now let me get this part out of the way.. before you start all the these options suck comments it was a tough decision & task on my part to pick just 16 bands out 100's that could have been deserving. And remember when my profile status for about 4 days was " PM your favorite rock band from the 90's ? well none of you did so this is what you get lol.
Now to select the bands and their seeding for the tournament ( after all every tournament needs a seeding tournament ) I had to come up with a formula. A way to rank them from 1-16 accordingly so I did a couple things I created a list of the top 50 songs gathered from the 16 competitors. Rated the songs 1-50. After that I took the top 3 rankings of each of the bands songs added them up and dividing that number by 3 giving each band a average ranking of their song quality. Now those bands with more than 3 songs I dropped their lowest song from the formula to even it out. For example Garbage had 5 songs in the top 50, I dropped their 2 lowest rated songs and added the average of their top 3. The list as seen here below is the Bad Ass Rock Song index or the B.A.R.S index .. where you most likely where have these songs falling down drunk back in the day :)
your list is as follows each song rated 1-50

Now other factors taken into consideration were MTV video music awards wins & nominations ( lets face it those mattered more to us than Grammy's ) for instance Smashing Pumpkins led the way with 15 nominations & 7 wins.. but obviously that wasn't the deciding factor in the seeding. Also live performance was a factor..
Now to the tournament... Nirvana with an average of 9.3, 10 moon man nominations with 5 wins & the mascara factor in their favor ( mascara factor being 14 & *********** girls crying their eyes out when he committed suicide ) comes in at your # 1 seed with their 1st round opponent coming in at the #16 seed. Other notable first round match ups feature # 8 Alice In Chains vs # 9 STP & of the course the always tricky #4 Offspring vs # 13 Bush ( the 4 vs 13 match up always yields an upset during March Madness ). And the rest of the field is Below hopefully you can make out the entire bracket.

Now before I get tons of hate mail I understand there are some notable bands missing from the field. The 2 most glaring omissions being Metallica & Guns N Roses. One simple reason ... to me both the bands made their brands in the 80's and when the 90's rolled around where already established in my eyes. I know " The Black " album may have been their most popular album because of this ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD-E-LDc384 )I would say this song smashes anything they did in the 90's ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM8bTdBs-cw ) And Guns N' Roses was a shell of themselves come the 90's .
As for the tournament we do have it's chalk through the entire 1st round with all the higher seeds winning including a controversial win by Limp Bizkit over fan favorite Green Day, Nirvana cruising by Creed with no problem, same with #2 Garbage easing past a game foo fighters bunch with a very talented Dave Grohl. So here's how your second round looks.

Now the tournament heats up with some intriguing 2nd round match ups with a highly anticipated grudge match between #3 seed Rage vs. the #6 seed Limp Bizkit where I have Bizkit pulling the upset to move on to the final 4 because of Fred Durst great stage presence live and just the fact they have Rage's number !!

Nirvana beats a very good Alice In Chains band and protects their #1 overall seed, and Garbage continues to roll beating in my opinion an overrated Chili Peppers band. And in the thriller of the night and the closest game of the tournament # 4 seed Offspring nets an overtime victory over #5 seed Smashing Pumpkins causing Billy Corigan to break the band up again.
So we're down to the final 4. I know who I have as the winner but who would you guys pick ? here's the bracket as it stands now.

You can post your winner in the comments section and I'll post mine in the blog tomorrow night !!
Now before I do so I have to give out some tournament awards.
Most Outstanding Player Dave Grohl- The man went from being a drummer for one of the most popular bands of all time to being the lead guitarist and vocalist for another successful band in the same decade.. I mean it's a no brainer who gets this award.
Best Live Band Limp Bizkit- Hate them or love them nobody did it better live then these guys did in the 90's the energy the way Durst had thousands eating out of the palm of his hand everyone was rocking khakis and a red baseball cap dying to see this band. Unfortunately they also caught a large part of the blame for one of the ugliest concert moments of the decade.
