Understanding and overcoming addiction
This blog is about a serious subject that affects a lot of people.
Addiction.
When you think of an addict you think of a person who is addicted to something i*****l...alcohol, *******, crack, duster, spice...but the list of things you can become addicted to go far beyond what you would normally think of when you think of harmful addictions. You can be addicted to working out and work out to the point of having zero body fat and no energy because you go overboard and burn up whatever calories you take in through hours and hours of excessive working out. You can become addicted to food (raises my hand) and turn to food and overeat again and again..often to the point of feeling sick for hours. ANYTHING can become an addiction...anything. When you engage in something that has harmful effects on you and your life it has crossed the line from interest to addiction.
Addiction isn't about whatever it is you are going overboard with. Addiction stems from one thing...PAIN..and lots of it. Whatever it is that's inside your head or heart that is hurting you set you on the road to overindulge in something to get away or escape from that pain. The d**gs or drink or whatever won't ever remove the source of the pain, but your excess of choice will make a temporary distraction. Did you pay attention to the word I just used right there? DISTRACTION, not SOLUTION. It will distract you from thinking about it and dealing with it but it won't HEAL it. The one and the only way to make the pain go away is to deal with it head-on.Walking around it again and again won't do the trick. Until you deal with the elephant in the room you have NO CHANCE of letting go of whatever it is you are addicted to. The source of pain is the weed you have to pull out by the roots so it won't grow back and continue to make a problem.
Addicts are people in pain. They are suffering on the inside and using something to cover it up or escape from it. Addiction isn't a d**g or alcohol problem isn't a PAIN problem that got taken in a direction that wasn't helpful, only harmful. They start out in pain with one issue and then the d**gs/alcohol just heap on more issues and the next thing you know you feel like all the pain and the issues are like a mountain sitting on top of you and you don't know how to get it off. It's overwhelming..so you give up because you don't know how to sort it all out. You say "fuck it...I'm buried in all this shit...might as well let go of the steering wheel and crash cause im going to anyway". Addicts feel hopeless and they stop caring because if they DID care caring would only make them hurt more. Being blind offers some sort of relief from the stress.
If you are an addict or know someone who is..understand..you have a problem with PAIN first before you have a problem with your d**g of choice. Face the pain. Face it. No d**g in the world is going to make it go away. Face it and if you do it will go away. It will have to. Because you pulled it out by the roots and it has nowhere to live. Get help if you know you are an addict. Talk to someone..anyone. You dont have to live life sad or in pain. You arent stuck. People want to help but you have to reach out to them first. Talk to friends,family..if you dont have family or friends reach out to hotlines that exist to help.
