Life & sex in film "Diary of a Nymphomani

“Diary of a Nymphomaniac” (2008, 97 minutes) is a Spanish film based on a memoir about the evolving struggle of one woman’s sex life -- evoking empathy, and ultimately acceptance in a celebration of the high sexed woman. Most of all it is about her need to empathize with herself. This is the journey about her own self-discovery.




As a teenager, she feels nothing the first time. But the next time with the same boyfriend, she discovers the pleasure of sex and penetrative fucking, and asks him for it “a hundred times” more.

By the age of 29 Valerie has lovers - but also boyfriends. But the latter don’t accept her need to fuck and fuck a lot. BF-Don’t you ever get tired? Val, I can’t keep up with your pace....

The film “Diary of a Nymphomaniac” was a box office hit in Europe, but a dud in the US.

(Film reviewers tend to be sexless geeks, anyway. And if not sexless, then envious of those who are sexy.) Too many cannot accept that women such as this do exist. But such women do. And Val is one.




Val: [on reaching orgasm] You deserve some flowers...I want to fuck you all night long!

Thus angrily exits “Alex, another man who has left me,” she says in despair.

Valerie visits her beloved grandmother in France and tearfully confesses: “I can’t control it..I need sex...I see a man and I need him. But no one understands that. People stare at me. It happens with strangers that don’t attract me. I’m scared. I’m scared of not being like other women....Sarced of being hurt someday....” Thus, a highly active and adventurous sex life conflicts with a 'successful' love life.

After a crisis in trying to establish a ‘normal’ relationship, Valerie is led to this path (as per the trailer):

“Now I’m putting my needs first...The only thing I want is pleasure, the only thing I can’t satisfy is my desire...and the more I explore, the further I am willing to go.

“Maybe I have passed the point of no return? -- or maybe this was who I really was?"

This is meaningful soft porn with a dramatic soul, tackling a real life dilemma.

She rejects the possessive relationship ideal we all grow up with. Valerie decides that a life lived with regret for the the paths not taken is not a life worth living.

She means “I‘m a promiscuous woman, yes -- because I want to use sex as a means to find what everyone is looking for -- recognition, pleasure, self-esteem, and, in short, love and affection.”
