One of the topics we are asked about most are the taboos surrounding anal sex. Given how curious people seem to be about this activity and oral sex we felt it worthwhile to take a quick look at both.
Like oral sex there is somehow a common misconception that having anal intercourse or other anal play is not really sex. Once again, YES, YES it is!!! Anal play of all types are in fact sexual acts.
1. Although a lot of people are engaging in anal play activities, not everyone considers anal stimulation a “real sex act.”
2. While adults largely agree that anal intercourse constitutes sex, they are somehow split about whether these other kinds of anal activities “count” as being sex. Today’s teenagers and many Millennial’s have fallen for the “urban legend” that oral and anal sex is not real sex, since you cannot get pregnant performing either.
3. Truth is anal sex is a very popular sexual activity in the United States today. Research suggesting that close to 50% of men and 38% of women have experimented with both giving and/or receiving anal sex.
4. Of course, anal intercourse is just one of many forms of anal stimulation that people engage in. For instance, some practice oral-anal stimulation called rimming, some use their digits called fingering and in some cases extreme players do what is called fisting; where the entire hand and even partial forearm is anally inserted.
5. Others of all genders use sex toys such as when a woman performs anal sex on a man while wearing a strap-on dildo, an activity known as pegging. We don’t have good data on how common these other anal activities are because researchers don’t routinely ask about them specifically in sex surveys.
6. While anal intercourse is the sexual activity people most commonly associate with gay men, research actually finds that men who have sex with men engage in other activities like oral sex and mutual masturbation far more frequently.
7. People engage in anal intercourse for a wide range of reasons and their attitudes toward it vary widely. For example, while some truly desire this activity and find it very pleasurable, others do it primarily to please a partner and find the experience to be physically and mentally uncomfortable, but do it anyway.
8. There are several things you can do if you want to try and make anal intercourse more pleasurable, including: pre intercourse enemas, heavy lubrication, slow and gentle penetration and frequent stops in the action to rest and adjust.
9. These guidelines won’t work for everyone though, because studies suggest that 10% to 15% of people complain of severe pain when even penetrated with a finger, much less a penis or dildo.
